Housing
How do I apply for social housing?
You can apply for social housing by completing a Social Housing Application Form. You will need to provide proof of identity, income details, and evidence of your current housing circumstances.
Applications can be submitted online through the portal or in person at the Housing Department, County Hall, Tallaght. Processing time is typically 8–12 weeks.
What is the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP)?
HAP is a form of social housing support provided by South Dublin County Council. Under HAP, the Council pays a rent subsidy directly to your landlord on your behalf. You then pay a weekly contribution to the Council based on your income and household size.
How do I report a repair in my council home?
Report repairs through the online portal, by phone (01 414 9000), or in person. Emergency repairs (no heating, flooding, security risks) are prioritised within 24 hours. Routine repairs are scheduled within 20 working days.
Planning
How do I check planning applications in my area?
Planning applications can be viewed on the SDCC Planning Portal. You can search by address, planning reference number, or applicant name. Applications are also displayed on a public notice board at County Hall.
Do I need planning permission for a house extension?
Some extensions are exempt from planning permission under specific conditions:
- Rear extension up to 40m² (single storey) or 12m² (first floor)
- The extension does not reduce private open space below 25m²
- The height does not exceed the existing dwelling
If your project exceeds these limits, or if your property is a protected structure, you will need to apply for planning permission.
How do I make an observation on a planning application?
You can submit an observation within the public consultation period (typically 5 weeks from the date of application). Observations can be made online or in writing to the Planning Department. A fee of €20 applies.
Roads & Transport
How do I report a pothole or road defect?
Report potholes and road defects through the "Report an Issue" feature on the public portal, by phone, or via the Fix My Street portal. Include the exact location and a photo if possible. Emergency hazards are addressed within 24 hours; routine defects within 10 working days.
How do I apply for a disabled parking bay?
Applications for disabled parking bays near your residence can be made to the Roads Department. You will need to provide a valid Disabled Parking Permit and proof of address. The traffic section will assess the location and suitability.
Environment
When is my bin collection day?
Waste collection in South Dublin is operated by private waste collectors. Contact your service provider directly for your collection schedule. The main providers serving the area include Panda, Greyhound, and CityBin.
How do I report illegal dumping?
Report illegal dumping through the portal, by phone (01 414 9000), or email environment@sdublincoco.ie. Include the location, description, and any photos. Reports can be made anonymously. The Environmental Enforcement team investigates all reports.

What are the opening hours of County Hall?
County Hall, Tallaght, Dublin 24 is open Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm (closed on public holidays). The motor tax office closes at 3:30pm.
How do I contact my local councillor?
You can find your local councillors using the "Find Your Councillor" feature on the Public Portal homepage. Enter your address or select your Local Electoral Area to view contact details for your elected representatives.
How do I pay my Local Property Tax?
Local Property Tax (LPT) is administered by Revenue. Payments can be made at revenue.ie. SDCC does not collect LPT directly, but a portion funds local council services.
